What Is PTSD & Trauma?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
PTSD is a serious mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event such as combat, sexual assault, a serious accident, natural disaster, childhood abuse, or sudden loss. It’s not a sign of weakness; it’s a natural response to extraordinary stress.
PTSD can develop immediately after a traumatic event or emerge months even years later. Without proper treatment, symptoms can worsen and significantly interfere with daily life, relationships, and physical health.
Common PTSD Symptoms
If you recognize these signs in yourself or a loved one, compassionate professional support is available:
- Flashbacks & intrusive memories
- Nightmares & sleep disturbances
- Emotional numbness or detachment
- Hypervigilance & startle response
- Avoiding trauma reminders
- Persistent guilt or shame
- Difficulty concentrating
- Irritability & anger outbursts
- Negative self-beliefs
- Feeling "on edge" constantly

How Common Is PTSD?
PTSD affects approximately 3.5% of U.S. adults annually about 13 million people. Women are twice as likely to develop PTSD as men. Many more live with subthreshold trauma symptoms that still significantly impact quality of life.

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD)
C-PTSD develops from prolonged, repeated trauma often in childhood or within abusive relationships. It includes all PTSD symptoms plus difficulties with emotional regulation, self-perception, and relational trust. Our team specializes in treating complex, layered trauma presentations.

The Mind-Body Connection
Trauma is stored not just in the mind it lives in the body. Untreated PTSD is linked to higher rates of cardiovascular disease, autoimmune conditions, chronic pain, and substance use. At Centia Health, our board-certified psychiatrist takes a whole-person approach that addresses both psychological and physical dimensions of trauma.

Your Questions Answered
How do I know if I have PTSD or just stress?
While stress is a normal response to difficult events, PTSD involves persistent, intrusive symptoms lasting more than a month that significantly impair daily functioning. A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation is the best way to get an accurate diagnosis and appropriate care.
Can PTSD be fully treated?
Yes, with proper evidence-based treatment, many people achieve significant symptom reduction and lasting recovery. EMDR, CPT, and other gold-standard therapies have strong research backing. Early intervention generally leads to better outcomes, but it’s never too late to seek help.
Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?
Not necessarily. Some evidence based treatments work effectively without requiring you to re-narrate every traumatic detail. Your comfort and safety are our priority, and your treatment pace is always in your hands. We will never push you faster than you’re ready to go.
How long does PTSD treatment take?
Treatment duration varies depending on trauma severity, chronicity, and individual response. Structured protocols like CPT typically run 12 sessions. Some patients experience significant relief in a few months; others benefit from longer-term care. We reassess progress regularly to keep your treatment plan optimized.
Can I receive PTSD treatment via telehealth?
Absolutely. Telehealth PTSD treatment is not only convenient research shows it’s equally effective as in-person care for most patients. For many trauma survivors, the familiarity and safety of their home environment can actually enhance the therapeutic process.
Will I need medication for PTSD?
Not everyone requires medication, but it can be a valuable component of treatment for some individuals. SSRIs and SNRIs are FDA-approved for PTSD and can reduce symptom severity. Any medication decisions are made collaboratively, based on your individual needs, history, and preferences.
