What Is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental health condition characterized by unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) performed to reduce anxiety. OCD affects approximately 2–3% of the U.S. population — yet it remains widely misunderstood and frequently undertreated.
OCD is not about being “neat” or “particular.” It is a serious neurobiological condition that can significantly impair daily functioning, relationships, and quality of life. The good news: with the right treatment, real and lasting recovery is possible.

Contamination OCD
Fear of germs, illness, or contamination leading to excessive cleaning, hand-washing, or avoidance behaviors.

Harm OCD
Intrusive fears of accidentally or intentionally harming oneself or others, causing extreme distress.

Checking OCD
Compulsive checking of locks, appliances, or safety measures driven by catastrophic "what if" thinking.

Pure O (Primarily Obsessional)
Distressing intrusive thoughts without obvious physical rituals — mental compulsions like reassurance-seeking or rumination.

Scrupulosity / Religious OCD
Intrusive doubts about morality, sin, or religious observance causing significant guilt and distress.
Common OCD Symptoms
OCD symptoms fall into two core categories. You may experience one, both, or a shifting pattern over time.

Repetitive Thoughts
Persistent, unwanted thoughts that feel impossible to dismiss or ignore.

Time-Consuming Rituals
Compulsions that consume 1+ hour per day, disrupting work and daily life.

Intense Anxiety
Severe distress when compulsions cannot be completed or triggers are encountered.

Avoidance Behaviors
Avoiding people, places, or situations that trigger obsessive thoughts.

Seeking Reassurance
Repeatedly asking others for reassurance or mentally reviewing past events.

Shame & Isolation
Feeling embarrassed about symptoms, leading to withdrawal from loved ones.

Common Questions About OCD Treatment
We believe informed patients make empowered decisions. Here are answers to questions we hear most often.
What is the most effective treatment for OCD?
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy is considered the gold-standard treatment for OCD, with strong evidence supporting its effectiveness. When combined with SSRI medication, most patients experience significant symptom reduction. At Centia Health, we use individualized combinations of ERP, CBT, and medication management for optimal outcomes.
How long does OCD treatment take?
Many patients begin noticing meaningful improvement within 12–20 sessions of ERP therapy. The total duration depends on OCD severity, symptom presentation, and individual response. We design treatment plans that are results-focused, with regular reassessment to ensure progress.
Does Centia Health treat OCD via telehealth?
Yes. We offer secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth appointments for all OCD services including psychiatric evaluation, ERP therapy, and medication management. Telehealth is available for patients in Pennsylvania and Kansas, making it easy to receive expert care from home.
Can OCD be cured with medication alone?
Medication (typically SSRIs) can significantly reduce OCD symptom severity, but research consistently shows that the combination of ERP therapy and medication produces the best, most durable outcomes. We rarely recommend medication as the sole treatment for OCD.
Do you accept insurance for OCD treatment?
Yes, Centia Health accepts most major insurance plans including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna/Evernorth, UnitedHealthcare, Highmark, Humana, TRICARE, Independence Blue Cross, AmeriHealth, OptumHealth, and Ambetter. Contact us to verify your specific coverage.
What's the difference between OCD and anxiety?
While OCD involves anxiety, it is a distinct condition characterized by the specific cycle of obsessions (intrusive thoughts) and compulsions (rituals to neutralize anxiety). OCD requires specialized treatment approaches like ERP — general anxiety therapy alone is typically insufficient for OCD.
