Getting Your Life Back Every Month.
When PMS Becomes Disabling
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) affects approximately 5-8% of women of reproductive age, yet it takes an average of 14 years to receive an accurate diagnosis. If you experience severe mood swings, irritability, depression, anxiety, or rage in the week or two before your period, symptoms so intense they disrupt your work, relationships, and daily functioning—you may be living with PMDD.
PMDD is not “just PMS” or something you need to “tough out.” It’s a legitimate psychiatric condition with neurobiological underpinnings, involving abnormal brain responses to normal hormonal fluctuations. The condition can be recognized as a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) when it substantially limits major life activities.
Specialized Treatment That Works:
As a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in women’s mental health, I understand the cyclical nature of PMDD and offer evidence-based treatments that can dramatically improve your quality of life:
First-Line Pharmacological Interventions:
- SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) – FDA-approved medications including sertraline, fluoxetine, and paroxetine, which can be taken continuously or only during the luteal phase
- Medication can be started during the symptomatic phase and stopped when symptoms resolve, offering flexibility.
Emerging and Complementary Treatments:
- Hormonal therapies, including oral contraceptives for appropriate candidates
- Novel treatments under investigation, including sepranolone (isopregnanolone)
- Non-pharmacological approaches: transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a promising drug-free advancement
- Nutritional and lifestyle modifications
Psychotherapy and Coping Strategies:
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) specifically tailored for PMDD
- Stress management techniques
- Symptom tracking to identify patterns and optimize treatment timing
What Treatment Looks Like:
During your consultation, we’ll review your symptom patterns, medical history, and previous treatment attempts. I’ll help you understand the neurobiology of PMDD and create a personalized treatment plan. Many patients experience significant improvement within one to two menstrual cycles.
You deserve to feel like yourself every day of the month. Let’s work together to give you back control of your life.
